A GIF is an image file that is sometimes used in photography, but is much more common as a web graphic.  GIFs are limited to 256 colours and can have a transparent background.  GIFs are also used for simple animations.

When transfer speeds were slower than today, many images were saved as GIFs to speed download time.  Now a GIF is used mostly for animation purposes.
