Aperture

The Aperture is the opening in the lens that allows light to pass through to the sensor or film.  Usually consisting of a number of blades, the aperture will change in diameter depending on the settings made by the camera or user.  The diameter of the aperture is designated by an “F-stop” number.  The diameter of the aperture also controls the depth of field.
