A full stop is a change in the exposure that requires a doubling (or halving) of the shutter speed. For example, there is one full stop of exposure between 1/500s and 1/1000s. The full stop can be made by adjusting your shutter speed, aperture or ISO.
Modern cameras allow us to change exposure by 1/2 stops or 1/3 stops as well as full stops.
